People can now shop for CBD and DVDs at Family Video – Bureau County Republican

PRINCETON — Driving past Family Video in Princeton, one will notice the new green signs outside the business advertising CBD (Cannabidiol) products at the store.

While one might wonder how videos and CBD health products go hand-in-hand, the story behind the new business venture is actually pretty interesting.

Keith Hoogland, president of Highland Ventures LTD., the corporate parent company of Family Video, got turned on to a CBD balm product as a remedy for his tennis elbow.
He was shocked at how quickly it cured the pain and decided to delve into some research about it.

He found there was not a lot of places where people could go and learn about the recently developed product and talk face-to-face with someone who could share the benefits of it.

So, he decided to bring the product to the Family Video communities and train employees to share about all it can do for pain and auto immune disorders.

“He saw there was a lack of ability to ask questions and have access to it. So he thought it was something we could get started on,” Oliver Owen, regional director of operations for Highland Ventures, said.

“This is something he really believes in, and we’re trying to get out and help people with it. … It’s a homegrown thing.”

Owen explained how the Native brand is 100 percent natural product. The CBD is derived from industrial hemp. Owen said the hemp grown for this particular product comes from the University of Colorado.

“There is no THC in it. … It’s one of the purest forms of hemp,” he said.

“It’s a nice, healthy, clean product that isn’t going to make you feel weird.”

THC stands for tetrahydrocannabinol, which is the active ingredient in cannabis.

Each product comes with a trackable code that can be traced back to the test to ensure there is no detection of THC.

The Native products come in all sorts of forms — from gummies, oil and spray to water, a rubbing balm and a lip balm.

Customers are using the products for a variety of health issues such as anxiety, stress, headaches, migraines, sleeplessness, inflammation, sore muscles, rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia and Parkinson’s disease.

There’s also an oil for dogs to help with pet issues.

Cari Hanson, store manager at Family Video in Princeton, has used the product on two of her children and believes it’s helped with their seizures and asthma flairs.

Her oldest daughter is on mediation to help control seizures, but Hanson said it has negative long-term effects. So she decided to cut back on her daughter’s dosage of seizure medication and is replacing it with a dose of CBD oil.

“So far, she’s been seizure free. A coincidence? Maybe, but I also think it’s helping,” she said.

Her 4-year-old son also has not had an asthma flair since taking doses of the CBD. “He hasn’t needed a treatment since I started him on it. Again, coincidental, who knows? But I think it’s really, truly working,” she said.

Owen said the launch of the CBD products at Family Video has attracted a new wave of customers who either have never shopped at a video store or it’s been years since they’ve roamed the shelves of DVDs.

“There’s a lot of customers under 30 years old that never had an account here. People are coming in and signing up and saying, ‘Oh, I didn’t you had this movie or that movie.’ In the digital age, you’ve got to go to three or four different places to find that movie, and a lot of people forgot the nostalgia of shopping for a movie,” he said.

“Some people would say, ‘This is weird, you’ve got videos and you’ve got CBD, and how do these two things relate?’ It’s all about helping out the community and sharing a product we believe can help cure some of the medical issues out there.”
