TEMPERANCE, Mich. (WTVG) – Video stores are a rare sight in many communities these days, but they’re still around, just doing business a little differently.
“It’s a way to, not necessarily keep us relevant, but keep us in business, keep us here,” said Andy Duran, store manager of Family Video in Temperance, Michigan, said.
Many of the remaining locations serve as multipurpose businesses, selling phones, partnering with Marcos Pizza and even a real estate company.
More recently, the company has entered a new arena, offering CBD products to customers.
“We have things like oils, sprays, gummy bears and balm,” Duran said. “Everything helps with everything.”
CBD is the non-psychoactive ingredient of cannabis plants. It can be extracted from both hemp and marijuana. The products sold at Family Video are 100% THC free, which means they won’t get you high. In fact, the company that makes the products makes it easy for customers to check the ingredients inside each bottle by scanning it with a smart phone.
“Everyone just assumed immediately that we were selling marijuana, that we were selling drugs,” said Duran. “All it took for them was to come in and just have a two-minute conversation and that helped everybody.”
Some would argue that the products treat things like migraines, muscle pain and even other, more serious conditions.
“We’re selling for things like Restless Leg Syndrome [and] it’s the same stuff we’re selling for people with cancer,” he told 13abc.
Duran says CBD has brought some new faces through the door and sometimes a movie leaves with them. But he admits that the new products are more than just a business plan.
“You’re helping so many people with so many different problems,” he said.
All of the employees who sell CBD products must take and pass a test first.
